New Report on 2019 NAMRS Data
ACL released a report of data collected by the National Adult Maltreatment Reporting System (NAMRS). This report details the finding from the fourth year (2019) of data collected by NAMRS. NAMRS is the only comprehensive national initiative compiling data on the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older adults and adults with disabilities as reported to adult protective services. Data collected by NAMRS include quantitative and qualitative responses on many areas within adult protective services. This includes data on APS practices and policies, investigation outcomes, demographics and characteristics of alleged victims and preparators, and other useful data.
Highlights from the report include:
- There were 1.3 million reports of alleged maltreatment received by APS programs across all states and territories.
- 51 percent of allegations were of self-neglect.
- 801,491 individuals received an investigation.
- 49 percent of victims received APS services.
Research Agenda for Adult Protective Services
ACL recently released the first Research Agenda for Adult Protective Services (APS). The goals of the Research Agenda include:
- Providing guidance to researchers, APS programs, and funders to help advance the field
- Highlighting gaps in research in order to inform the APS field
- Helping build a cohesive body of evidence for the APS field.
- What is the impact of caseload size on the quality of APS investigations and interventions?
- What is the impact of interventions for perpetrators on APS client outcomes?
- What is the impact of specialized APS units (for example, units focused on financial exploitation or self-neglect) on investigation outcomes?

Over the past few years, the NCEA’s Reframing Elder Abuse project, an initiative to change the way we talk about elder abuse with the public, has built momentum. The project aims to demonstrate how we can restructure our communities to put elder abuse on the public agenda, generate a sense of collective efficacy on the issue, and boost support for systemic solutions to prevent and address it. Social media can be the first, and in some ways, the easiest place to begin to re-frame how the public thinks about elder abuse. During this webinar, participants will review best practices in public communications on elder abuse based on an evidence-based strategy and receive tips and resources in social media application.
Presenters:
Aly Neumann has served as Project Coordinator for the NCEA’s Reframing Elder Abuse project for 3 years. She has conducted dozens of interactive professional presentations and technical assistance on applying evidence-based public communications practices on elder abuse.
Kimmy Moon serves as Project Coordinator at the NCEA where she guides the Center’s STEAP (Supports and Tools for Elder Abuse Prevention) Initiative and coordinates Volunteer Consumer Committee activities. She is also responsible for content development, curation, and analytics for NCEA’s social media channels and helps build NCEA’s online presence while maintaining a loyal audience.
