The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Consumer Education and Engagement Division, Office for Older Americans is the only office in the U.S. federal government specifically dedicated to protecting the financial well-being of those aged 62 years and older. Below are some examples of the work carried out by the office.
Research
  • A report and resource guide to support groups in creating or expanding community elder financial protection networks​
Best Practices Guides
  • A set of voluntary best practices to help banks and credit unions fight the pervasive problem of financial exploitation of older Americans
Financial Education
  • Created in partnership with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), an instructor-led training module providing information on preventing and responding to elder financial exploitation and common scams
  • Guides to assist people who are managing money or property for others who are unable to pay bills or make financial decisions  
  • In collaboration with the U.S. Social Security Administration, an on-line tool to help people figure out the best time for them to start collecting benefits
 In addition, there are a number of other guides and consumer advisories the Office created to help older consumers with an array of financial decisions.
